What would a broader view on the Yasuní-ITT case include?

"The general idea of the Yasuni case is very interesting and innovative to make not only oil prices being paid but also ecosystem services being more expensive than just the oil buried down in the earth. People need to be aware that payments are needed. And maybe German development cooperation is able to support these processes. I understood they were trying to support this but it wasn’t easy and the process is now somehow interrupted.

They are starting to drill for oil in the region, at least partly. If we talk about the Yasuni region, how the Yasuni ITT region is only part of it, 20%. Yasuni national park is much bigger. We in German development cooperation or as scientists should more look at the whole ecosystem and not only a small portion of it. Especially if we come to the development of the region, everything will be affected. We need a broader view on this situation.

Also the other 80% of the region where we find oil, it hasn’t been negotiated. It’s only the 20%, the smaller part. The payments are always based on the oil prices not on the ecosystem services that the forest provides. The focus needs to be shifted a bit towards ecosystem services and not that much on oil."

(Quote of the interview with Pierre Ibisch and Christian Nowicki)
